Measure Once, Fit Perfectly
Ninety percent of ill-fitting blinds come from a measuring error, not a manufacturing one. Here is exactly how the pros do it — in about five minutes per window.
Measure the width in three places
Measure the exact opening width at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the NARROWEST of the three — window openings are rarely square, and the narrowest point decides whether the shade fits.
Measure the height in three places
Measure from the top of the opening to the sill on the left, centre, and right. For an inside mount, record the LONGEST of the three so no gap of light is left at the bottom.
Check your depth
Measure how deep the recess is from the front edge to the glass. Most roller and cellular shades need about 2 inches to mount flush; shutters and wood blinds want 2.5 to 3 inches.
Do not deduct anything
Write down the raw opening measurements exactly as you read them. The workroom applies the correct manufacturing deductions — if you subtract too, the shade comes out too small.
The five mistakes we see most
- Measuring in one spot only — almost no window is perfectly square.
- Rounding to the nearest half-inch. Always use the nearest 1/8 inch.
- Using a cloth or fabric tape, which stretches. Use a steel tape.
- Measuring an existing blind instead of the window opening itself.
- Deducting for clearance yourself — the workroom already does this.
